What do you think of when you hear the term “preacher’s wife”? Hmm…

One who sees only in black in white?

Much like Krispy Kreme and its famous “Hot Now!” donuts sign, I think Southern cooks could benefit from a “Hot Now!” biscuits sign. Call this neon biscuit beacon an updated version of hollerin’ or triangle-ringing – the modern day equivalent of the traditional dinner bell. Or breakfast bell. Or supper bell. Or all three as scratch buttermilk biscuits are welcome at each, sometimes even in the same day!

Sometimes I’m asked if I miss teaching and if I’ll “go back” once all the kids are in school. Ummm, how do I say “no” and “no” politely? Now don’t get me wrong – I loved teaching biology and physical science. However, I feel I’m still very much a teacher – only with fewer students (just 3!) and a lot less paperwork! That said, I’d like to resume my former role as a high school teacher again for a moment. So, please clear your desk – it’s time for a pop quiz! And, please keep the groans to yourself.

The running joke in Nashville is that there’s a conspiracy between the meteorologists and grocery stores to forecast snow a couple of times each winter. This results in kids getting their hopes up (and more often than not, dashed), schools being called off before the first flake has even fallen, and a mad rush to the grocery store to stock up – just in case.

My husband’s fantasy football season is over. My home team Titans didn’t make it into the postseason. My father-in-law’s beloved Packers exited in week 1 of the playoffs. Three reasons why my attention for football can now be fully directed where it really belongs – to food for the Super Bowl!

In the car, rocking out with the “The Partridge Family” (yes, it’s possible!):

Linden: I woke up in love this morning!
Me (worried where this was going, based on the song): Really?
Linden: Yeah – with you and Daddy!

Sorry for the posting lull. I was, sadly, beginning to think I’d left my cooking karma back in 2009. First I suffered through the “mocha meringue massacre“. Then, I made granola, and it bit the turned to dust. (Why, oh why, does my granola not clump!?) So, I was a bit wary of having a third strike.

Growing up I detested eggnog. I probably still would except that our local dairy was giving out samples at the farmers’ market a few weeks ago. Not one to pass up free food, I got a cup, took a sip, and lo and behold had a “Mikey moment”. I liked it.

Sure, I could make this a touching post about how my just-turned 7-year-old requested “gingerbread cookies on a stick, like last year” for her birthday treat.

I like to think of winter squash as the Aretha Franklins of the squash family – just looking for a little R-E-S-P-E-C-T. Summer squash, such as yellow crookneck, pattypan, and zucchini, get lots of love here in the South. Sadly, we often relegate winter varieties such as butternut, delicata, and carnival to backup singer status (or really, something closer to William Hung, you know, like, “Please, dear God, never let him sing again.” OK, wait, hold on just a second. I’ll return you to the food related portion of this post in a minute, but seriously… I just discovered that William Hung has a Christmas album. And yes, it really is called *Hung for the Holidays*. I mean, wow. WOW. OK, sorry, back to the squash.)
