My favorite part of this little video is certainly Oakley’s obliteration, but the rest of it is fun too. Last night, we watched some video taken by the late, great Thelma. I was struck by the fact that even really bad video can become exceptionally valuable/enjoyable with the passage of time. Hopefully this is reasonably fun, even now.

Ask yourself this… are you ready for a throwdown? –Bobby Flay
Bobby Flay has a show on The Food Network in which he travels the country challenging various cooks to make their favorite dish in a competition with him.
A couple of days ago, Angie suggested that sharing Oakley’s hula hooping skills wouldn’t be enough… We needed to provide some context… We need to know from whence she got her skills.
And so, the Hula Hoop Throwdown was born. Was I ready for a throwdown? Yes I was.
Video, and how I shoot it

Between Jenn and myself, we’ve had a few folks ask us about video cameras lately. Apparently, many folks we know are ready to upgrade/replace/buy. Since I play around with this stuff a fair amount, I thought I’d just write my thoughts down here and let anyone argue with me if they want.
First off, I have four different devices that can capture video right now. Yes, four. I know it’s a little ridiculous.

For those of you who love Miss Donna like I do, this video could be a lot of fun. Yes, it’s Lindy centric. And yes, my daughters are made because it “skips”, meaning I cut out large sections of the show. I figure all of you might appreciate that.
So, 8 minutes total of Lindy dancing. Enjoy! (She’s on the far right most of the time.)
Chilling On Mothers Day

Just sharing a little snippet of life at the Martin house here. Like all the videos on the site, there’s not some “glorious” moment. They’re basically moments captured for me to return to when everyone is totally different in a few years.
Mothers Day was awesome last weekend… just a good day of hanging out together, etc. I was so enjoying watching my four ladies open the presents that I decided to get the video camera. Fortunately, it didn’t really ruin the moment, so I got a reasonable picture of what was going on…
Aspen’s Other Musical

Yesterday, I got the chance to skip out of work for a bit to see Aspen’s 2nd Grade play, Anchors Away. I must admit, I occasionally wonder how my parents suffered through all of my performances as a kid, band, jazz band, choir, etc. I was hyper involved and my parents were equally so, always making time to be at the various shows. Around these parts, May brings a pile of shows. School show, dance show, church show… we’ve got them all.
I provide all of this prologue to say one thing. This show was really impressive. Seriously. I don’t know if it’s just the fact that the kids are getting older and so the quality is improving? Or is it a lucky coincidence? Or perhaps a really gifted teacher who organized a great show? Or maybe Lipscomb’s shows are just better than Edmondson’s? Or maybe I just enjoyed myself more because I remembered my tripod? I really don’t know where to hand out the credit, honestly, but this show really struck me as better than most.
As many of you know, I’m willing to complain about things with schools. (For example, we are currently crafting some of our own religious doctrine that will allow us to opt out of homework next year as conscientious objectors. That’ll work, right? ) But this time, with this show, our school hit the sweet spot. The music was well performed, the kids seemed to enjoy it, each of the 100+ kids has their own opportunity to shine, even the level of the set and the costumes struck me as appropriate (not over the top, but enough to be unified). As I understand it, one of the teachers really crafted the show on her own… even more impressive. So, full credit goes to the staff at Lipscomb who put this together!
Without further adieu, I offer you Anchors Away. It’s a show that lasted about 45 minutes collapsed down into about 8 minutes. It’s also as “Aspen heavy” as it can be (you’ll find her as one of the introductory captains in addition to as a dancer in one of the songs).
Technical Note: I’m using YouTube these days because it’s easy and it does offer HD now. Click on the “high quality” link in the lower right of the video if you want it bigger and better.
Aspen’s Musical

Aspen put on a great show last week at church. Her musical, It’s Cool in the Furnace, featured some fun music and some really bad video. That’s right, my seat didn’t afford me a great angle for video. I’ve attached a few seconds worth of video of Aspen (blown out by light in the center). Following that, though, is a really cool thing the church did for the second year in a row.
This is what they call the “hands team” doing something I remember well from the opening of Pippin (another musical). What so cool about this is the way that several kids work together in anonymity to create something. Not only that, the simplicity of it is awesome to me. Sometimes images like this (white on black) can be more meaningful to the viewer than something that’s higher fidelity and leaves less to the imagination.

Wednesday nights are the night where Jenn and I end up walking past each other. I get home right before she takes Aspen to church. She makes dinner, it’s on the table, it’s all very nice, except…
Tonight when I got home, I discovered she had brought this home from the library.
Somebody, please tell me what I did…
Update: Already, Oakley has asked me if she can play track 4 again.
Another Update: The second song on which a repeat was requested? Macarena.
And a final update… just what the girls did to track 4…

Aspen did a great little oral presentation at school this week, her first. Lasting about a minute, you can catch the official presentation and the rehearsal right here.
